Engraving and embossing are different methods to make markings on metal tags. However, they differ in processes, durability, and suitability for different purposes.
These metal etching services are ideal to create durable and personalized presents for your loved ones, too. Whether they’re metal bottles, household cooking vessels, or key chains, they make for quirky and unique gifts.
Read on to know more about metal embossing and engraving, and understand the difference between the two.
Embossing
Embossing uses custom dies to mark metal, with the characters raised above the metal plane, to create a 3D image.
Embossing is a durable method of marking metal. Since there’s no ink used, no amount of sunlight or UV radiation can make the letters, numbers, or designs fade away. The raised alphabets are also easily visible from afar, and are unaffected by regular wear and tear.
To emboss custom designs, custom dies need to be made – a new one for each design. These dies can be used for large scale production, too.
However, creating multiple dies for multiple custom designs can be an expensive affair, which is when variable embossing machines are used.
Aluminum and stainless steel are the two main materials used for embossing, and are usually used to make safety valves, asset tags, telephone pole tags, and super elevation markers.
Embossing cannot be done on all materials, and has its limitations, which is where engraving comes in.
Engraving
Engraving is the process of using laser, or a tool, to cut a design directly into the material that needs to be marked. You can engrave close to anything – wood, metal, plastic, leather. Phone covers – you name it.
This is a method that has been used historically for artistic printmaking, map making, etc. and is now popularly being used to carve metal. Traditional engraving by hand or with the use of machines, is still practiced by goldsmiths, glass engravers, gunsmiths etc. However, modern industrial techniques such as photoengraving and laser engraving have many important applications, such as on name plates, keys, vessels, and so on.
Engraving is a tough and time consuming process, and is usually recommended for small quantities.
Since the design is directly incised into the metal, the design is clear and requires no ink. Due to this, it provides significant durability, and is not susceptible to fading and wearing off.
