How to take care of your leather handbag?
We all know leather is a fussy material that needs ample care. But if you treat it well, this reliable, smart looking material will last you a lifetime. Whether it’s your sturdy laptop bag, or a classic handbag, being left without appropriate care can be detrimental to its quality and longevity.
- Clean them regularly
Cleaning your bag is arguably the most important part of maintaining it. Brush off loose dirt on your bag with a soft cleaning brush. Then, you can use a leather cleaning ointment with a soft cloth to clean your leather bag, using light, circular motions. - Condition and protect them
Leather is an organic material, prone to deterioration in harsh weather conditions. To protect your leather bag, use beeswax, or a commercially available protectant spray.
Once you have a protective covering on your bag, condition it regularly to make sure it remains in the best state throughout your usage of it. Conditioning your leather bag will keep it moisturized, so no cracks develop on it. - Extend their life by using them well
Turn your leather bag inside out every once in while (after emptying it, of course) to air it out. This will prevent it from gathering mold and odor, and you might just find trash at the bottom to throw out!
Avoid letting your bag rub against denim – whether it’s jeans or jackets – to prevent stains, scratches and other wear and tear. Denim can also transfer color to your leather
It’s also suggested that you let any water spills on your bag (which you should actually avoid at all costs – leather isn’t meant to be around water), let it air-dry. Don’t use any heating products, as this can damage the leather.
Finally, don’t over stuff it! - Stain removal
You can use cornstarch to remove grease stains, and nail polish remover to get rid of ink stains. Wipe down your bag everyday to get rid of dirt, or those can cause stains, too.
Also remember to deal with stains as soon as they happen, or they could become too stubborn to get rid of, later! - Store them carefully
Leather bags must be stored in soft, breathable bag covers, away from direct heat and sunlight. Just like other handbags, don’t use plastic or vinyl coverings, as they retain moisture, and leather and water are not friends.
To maintain their shape, stuff them with old t shirts, scarves, or tissue paper. Don’t use newspaper, because the ink can stain the insides of your bag. Don’t over stuff them either, because this can lead to your bag being bulgy and misshapen!
Don’t keep these beauties confined to the dark for too long, either. Air them out regularly to keep them fresh, and mold-free.
Even though you now know how you can elongate your leather bags’ life, mishaps are common. Broken zips, stubborn stains, tearing lining, and so much more that you can’t control.
